This past Saturday night January 7, 2012 my “Homie” and close Hells Angel Brother passed away. His name is “Lurch” Lurch got in the Club on November 11, 1967 in San Diego. The first time I saw Lurch was at a “Love-In” (when was the last you heard that word) at La Jolla Cove in San Diego early in 1968. Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin was the lead singer) was playing a free concert that day. That was the first time I ever saw a Hells Angel and the beginning of my dream to become a member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. Lurch then transferred to Oakland and has been a member of that Charter ever since. He will be missed…

TONIGHT’S STORY: “RICK AND BASS LAKE” By Cincinnati (Cincinnati is the pen name of my AFFA Hells Angel Brother Moldy Marvin HAMC Oakland who passed away a few years back)

“RICK AND BASS LAKE”

Rick Talbot was flat out determined to ride to Bass Lake. The night before we were to leave for our annual Bass Lake Run, Rick wrecked his bike out-running the cops. Well, almost out-running the cops. He had been out on Telegraph Ave. in Berkley trying to get lucky with the bitches when the pork came after him.

Not needing a ticket and not wanting to see a cop because of a few warrants, he took off. He would have made it too, except for smacking a car that pulled out in front of him. The cops picked his butt up off the asphalt and hauled him off to jail. Getting himself and his bike out of jail took all of his, his girlfriend’s, and a few others’ money.

His bike was fucked up pretty good and as we were leaving at 6 A.M. and it was almost daylight by the time Rick got out of jail, he did not have the time or money to get his bike in shape for the Run.

He made it! He pulled up to the bar everyone was meeting at, on a bike; the only problem is that it was a Honda. Now I don’t know if he knocked someone off of it with a 2 by 4, stole it from off the street or out of someone’s garage, or just borrowed it, which I doubt because when he pulled up he quickly pulled out some rattle cans of flat black paint and went to work on his little red darling. But I do know for sure he did not buy it.

In those days our gas stops were about 60 to 65 miles apart because we all ran small tanks and our bikes would not go much more than 70 miles without refilling our tanks.

All the way from the East Bay to the lake, it seemed we ran into more of our people at each gas-stop, and at every gas-stop there was a fist fight. At every gas-stop there was a new bunch of anti-Honda guys and they were upset about Rick’s little red sweetheart. All of Rick’s spray can work to cover up the original bright red paint seemed to have been in vain because by the time we got to the lake, Rick had had so many bloody noses that the Honda was almost red again.

We rolled into the Run site and as we shut down our bikes and were climbing off of them, we hear a blood curdling scream and then a noise that was unlike anything we had ever heard. We look into the trees and see a big cloud of dust coming coming straight at us and it is screaming. It’s Rick and his red speckled Honda. He had jerked the exhaust off of his pride and joy and was going as fast as that Jap piece of shit would go, right through the middle of us, heading straight into the lake. He flies off an embankment about 25 feet and lands in the middle of the cove. We see his head pop up about 50 feet from shore.

A cheer goes up for him for sacrificing the rice burner to what-ever god he had in mind that day. Which was cool. What wasn’t cool is that Rick did not know how to swim. he’s out there in the cove going “Help, help.” We think he’s just fucking around so some of the guys start throwing beer cans, rocks, and other shit at him. We slowly realize that he is serious and just might be in trouble when this big ass ski boat comes idling into the cove. it is being piloted by your typical southern California blond creep at the wheel and there are 5 or 6 bikini clad foxes hanging all over it.

They pluck Rick out of the water and as they are turning toward us, Rick whispers something in the captain’s ear. He turns and hits the throttle and Rick lets out a big laugh, gives us all the finger and dives into a sea of titties.

Yeah, I guess you do meet the nicest people on a Honda.

Well, that is tonight’s story. I hope you enjoyed it. Do not feel too bad for “Lurch.” Lurch was a Hells Angel for more than 40 years and he was involved in more wild and fun times like that than 10 people can experience in one lifetime. AFFA Lurch…

NEXT TIME from Dave’s World: A short story written by my pal Cisco, President and 40 plus years member of the Hells Angels Oakland California.

Rick got that Honda from a 2400 Haste St resident named Dell who wanted it to disappear so she could collect the insurance money to fund her trip to Europe… I was there when she offered it to him…. Somewhat ironically, Dan Millman, the gymnast and author of The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, lived on the same floor earlier in the year.

I met Lurch in big bear and we just hit it off and had this instant trust that rarely comes in a lifetime. I invited him to a video the next day and he picked me up n hid bike.. it’s funny to think of him at a video now looking back. He had a brother with him and I remember when we went the sit down its was like the parting of the red sea. People moved as far as they could get from us. He was a very good friend from that day forward. He was a very quite man and didn’t talk much to others but to me he opened up about his life and I was and am honored he trusted me with his dark secrets that have never left my lips a purposely forgotten. I love you Lurch and their is a piece of my heart that will always be with you and will cherish our friendship always. You mattered.
